The book “I Know why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou represents the autobiography of the author’s life. From when she was a girl till the moment she became a woman. During this period of time Maya experiences a lot of changes, the little girl she was at the beginning became a self confident woman at the end.
First of all, at the beginning of the story, Maya and her big brother Bailey were living with their grandmother (Momma Henderson) in Stamps because neither of here parents took them after their divorce. This of course affected her a lot. She thought that her parents didn’t like her, that she was rejected and that no one cared about her. All of this changed after spending time in Stamps with Momma. She felt liked by others (Momma loved her in a very special way, and Bailey couldn’t let her alone, they stayed together all the time), she also respected others (The most respected person was Mrs. Bertha Flowers), finally, she of course felt fear towards other (Miss Ruth, Miss Helen, Miss Eloise who mocked Annie Henderson by imitating her posture). So we could say that from being a self-doubting girl, she became a more confident and self-assured teenager.
However when she moved to live with her mother (Vivian Baxter), all her life has collapsed. She became an insecure child with a lot of fears. This was caused by Mr. Freeman who molested and raped her. After this event she became sick, sick of life, sick of everyone. Moreover, her time spent with her father aggravated her case. All her progress made after her rape vanished. Her father crushed her self-confidence with all his arrogant remarks. She now had to start over from zero.
Finally, Maya tried to regain everything she lost. And with the help of Daddy Clidell she succeeded. The latter is the first real father in Maya's life, he teaches her to play poker, blackjack, tonk and high, low, Jick, Jack and the Game. What Maya experienced afterwards changed her life. The lessons of tolerance, friendship and love gave her hope, gave her faith, so she began to grow in confidence day by day.
All these changes in Maya’s life affected her in a good way. From being a girl to an adolescent to a woman she explored herself, and found her true self. She became a self confident, secured and open minded woman.
